Letter written on behalf of Patrick Moore (Director, The Andy Warhol Museum) for the Carnegie Travel Program trip to Spain 2018
Dear Salutation:
As you know I have a very special relationship with Spain that starts with my husband Joaquin who hails from Santander, Spain and now extends to a vacation home we have just built in the countryside outside of Santander. It was my good fortune to become the Director of The Warhol just as The Warhol was completing plans for a major exhibition in Spain, primarily drawn from our collection and organized by the Museo Picasso in Málaga.
Joaquin and I thought the opening in Málaga in May 2018 would be the perfect opportunity to invite a special group of friends and supporters of The Warhol to join us and experience Spain through our eyes. This will be a very special trip that will start in the resort city of Málaga at the Museo Picasso where you will experience the atmosphere of southern Spain while celebrating Andy Warhol’s work being exhibited in a museum dedicated to that other icon of modern art, Pablo Picasso. We will be welcomed by the leadership of the museum and representatives of the Picasso family for the private opening of the exhibition.
After Málaga, Joaquin and I would like to show you some of the best private collections and museums of Madrid, my favorite city in Spain. Although there are many other beautiful Spanish cities, Madrid has an energy and art scene like no other.
After Madrid, it will be our pleasure to welcome you to our home in Santander. Santander and the north is the “real Spain.” We will enjoy great seafood, tour the new Centro Botin designed by Renzo Piano and opened by the Botin family (founders of Banco Santander) and have a dinner at our house in the country. We will also take a day trip to see the Guggenheim Bilbao, known both for its amazing Frank Gehry building and a singular collection of Richard Serra sculptures installed in a monumental gallery.
If you have time, there will also be an optional postlude trip to Barcelona, which is itself a living museum with its Gaudi architecture and exceptional food!
I am reaching out first to The Warhol’s board and Portrait Society members because this is necessarily a small group. Please contact me at [email protected] or Barbara Tucker at [email protected] to let us know of your interest. Once we ascertain the interest in the trip, I will send out a detailed itinerary with pricing information. The main trip is May 27-June 5, 2018 and the optional postlude is June 5-7, 2018.
Joaquin and I hope you will join us on this exciting and heartfelt trip.
Yours,
Patrick Moore
